Stool covers can either be permanently attached or removable. Your decision depends on the type of stool you have and the type of cover you want.
Permanent Covers
- Permanent covers require some upholstery work on your part. First you'll need to remove the old cover by removing the staples, then stripping off the cover and batting. If you buy a finished cover, you can place it on the floor, lay the stool upside down on top of it, and re-staple it.
If you're making your own cover, you'll need to cut out a circle of fabric large enough to cover the seat and batting and extend to the underside. You should also replace the batting or foam. Lay the stool on top of both, trim the batting to size, and then use a heavy-duty stapler to attach the new fabric.
Removable Covers
- Removable covers also come in two styles. Simple fabric covers usually have elastic edges so you can stretch the cover over your existing seat. You don't have to remove anything. You can also opt for a removable cover with the foam built in. You simply strip the stool down to the base, and then slide the new cover on top.
If you have a wooden or metal stool with a seat that doesn't need a cover, you can buy a round seat cushion that attaches with fabric ties. These cushions are often very thick and comfortable. They're also easy to remove for cleaning or redecorating.
